I wish I had thought about retirement earlier on, rather than take a "something
will turn up" attitude. I would recommend coaching to anyone who is thinking of
retirement.
Paul’s coaching has given me an improved ‘mental framework’ for
assessing retirement issues in a wider context, an improved focus on
individual issues and a more methodical approach to working through
issues.
Are you contemplating retirement, or have you recently retired?
Have you given as much thought to a life after work as you have done to whether you will have enough money to live on?
Are you sure that your retirement plans will last a lifetime, and not just the first twelve months?
The average age of retirement in UK is now about 58. The life expectancy for people, post retirement, is well into their seventies. In other words, 25% of your life may be spent ‘in retirement’.
As a general rule, those who are coming up to retirement now are better off, healthier and better educated than their parents. Given this, it is clear that they will have very different expectations from this period of their life.
The concept of the Third Age recognises that many people see this period as an opportunity to do things that were not possible earlier in their lives. They see this period as an active period, not their declining years.
Our research has shown that above a basic level money has very little to do with a satisfying retirement. It showed that those who plan for retirement have a better retirement. People sometimes return from the overseas holiday or cruise that they have always promised themselves to find that their days are now empty; that their plans were only short term and that there is nothing to replace the friendships, challenges and structure provided during their working life.
Our clients value being able to discuss their feelings with someone who has experienced the feelings of ‘retirement’ and who is able to help them work through the issues and identify all the options available to them. They value the help in putting their thoughts, including their fears, into perspective and confidently planning their retirement.
